RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, The Honorable John Van de Kamp has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 81; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of Pasadena, California, the Honorable John Van de Kamp was the loving and devoted husband of Andrea, nee Fisher; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable John Van de Kamp was the much-adored father of Diana to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable John Van de Kamp graduated from Stanford Law School and was a Past President of the State Bar of California; and

WHEREAS, A former Public Defender, the Honorable John Van de Kamp served as the Attorney General of California from 1983 to 1991; and

WHEREAS, During his esteemed tenure as Los Angeles County's top prosecutor, the Honorable John Van de Kamp successfully championed the nation's first restrictions on assault rifles after a gunman killed five children at a school in Stockton; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable John Van de Kamp later served as the Independent Reform Monitor for the City of Vernon, a watchdog position in which he was in charge of ensuring ethical governance for the community; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable John Van de Kamp serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared John Van de Kamp to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable John Van de Kamp imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this nineteenth day of April, 2017, do hereby commemorate the Honorable John Van de Kamp for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
