RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Bruce McCandless has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 80; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Bruce McCandless was a Naval aviator and NASA astronaut who greatly contributed to the success of our nation's space program; and
WHEREAS, A third generation United States Navy officer, Bruce McCandless was the son and grandson of decorated war heroes; and
WHEREAS, Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Bruce McCandless served as a fighter pilot on the USS Enterprise during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis blockade; and
WHEREAS, Bruce McCandless was selected for astronaut training during the Gemini program; and
WHEREAS, Bruce McCandless was the first NASA astronaut to fly freely and untethered in space during a 1984 mission of the Challenger; and
WHEREAS, Bruce McCandless logged more than 312 hours in space and was a member of the Discovery crew in 1990 that delivered the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit; and
WHEREAS, Following his service with NASA, which included key roles with ground control, Bruce McCandless worked for Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Colorado; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Bruce McCandless serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Bruce McCandless to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Bruce McCandless was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his wife, Ellen, and his two children, Bruce McCandless imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
