TRIBUTE TO CAROLYN THOMAS RUSH

 

WHEREAS, On March 13, 2017, Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom, has granted eternal rest to Carolyn Thomas Rush, a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a pillar of her community; and

 

WHEREAS, Carolyn started her life journey on May 27, 1949 in Memphis, Tennesee. She migrated to this city at an early age where she graduated from Hirsh High School and matriculated with high honors at Roosevelt University with a Bachelors of Art in Organizational Leadership; and

 

WHEREAS, For more than three decades, Carolyn was employed by the Children's Home & Aid Society. As well as being a community organizer, she also was a precinct captain and political strategist in many campaigns. She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights Movement, working to end discrimination in housing and employment. In 2008, Carolyn Rush was a delegate for Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1981, Carolyn was united in holy matrimony to the Honorable Bobby L. Rush, U.S. Representative of the Illinois Is' Congressional District. Their blended family consisted of seven children and 11 grandchildren. In 1999, a son, Huey Rich, tragically passed at 29 years of age; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Roderick T. Sawyer, Alderman of the 6lh Ward, has apprised this august body of this remarkable and respected woman's life and transition; now therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this 29th Day of March, 2017 AD, do hereby express our sincerest sorrow upon learning of the passing of Carolyn Thomas Rush and extend our deepest condolences to her family, her many friends and all of those whose lives she touched.
