RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Charles Williams has officially announced his retirement from the City of Chicago as the Commissioner of the Department of Streets & Sanitation; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Charles Williams was named Commissioner of the Department of Streets and Sanitation in October of 2012 by Mayor Rahm Emanuel; and
WHEREAS, Charles Williams previously served 34 years with the Chicago Police Department and four years as National Security Director for Merchandise Mart Properties; and
WHEREAS, As Commissioner of the Department of Streets and Sanitation, Charles Williams used his strong leadership and organizational skills to cut redundancy and modernize operations; and
WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Charles Williams, the City of Chicago implemented a grid system for garbage collection that saved taxpayers nearly $30 million annually; and
WHEREAS, Charles Williams also eliminated a graffiti clean-up backlog and significantly reduced the tree trimming backlog; and
WHEREAS, During his law enforcement career, Charles Williams received a number of awards, including the Carter Harrison Honorable Mention Award, the Blue Star Award, four Department Lifesaving Awards, two Unit Meritorious Awards and 94 Honorable Mention Awards; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Charles Williams serve as an example to all; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of December, 2017, do hereby congratulate Charles Williams on the occasion of his retirement and do hereby express our gratitude for his dedicated public service; and
