RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Andrew Athens has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-one; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, An internationally known business leader and philanthropist, Andrew Athens was the loving husband for sixty-seven years of Louise; and

WHEREAS, Andrew Athens was the much-adored father of Paul and Jackie and grandfather of four to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Born Andreas Athanasoulas to immigrant parents in the City of Chicago, Andrew Athens was a Captain during World War II in the United States Army in Europe; and

WHEREAS, Andrew Athens was a co-founder of the Metron Steel Corp. in 1950 where he served as President and Chief Executive Officer until 1991; and

WHEREAS, Andrew Athens was President for several decades of the Archdiocesan Council of the Greek Orthodox Church in America; and

WHEREAS, Andrew Athens was a generous philanthropist and the Founding President of the World Council of Hellenes; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Andrew Athens serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Andrew Athens to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Andrew Athens was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Andrew Athens imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of April, 2013, do hereby commemorate Andrew Athens for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
