RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Chicago's independent, locally owned businesses keep wealth circulating in our community, adding to Chicago's economic vitality and resilience; and

WHEREAS, local business owners are stewards of our community, providing quality jobs, engaging in civic concerns, and contributing to local non-profits; and

WHEREAS, a unique array of independent, locally owned businesses preserves the culture and character of Chicago's neighborhoods and creates strong a sense of place; and

WHEREAS, independent, locally owned business help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centers that are essential to reducing sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution; and

WHEREAS, independent, locally owned businesses are committed to place, contributing to the local economy and responding to the needs of their community over many generations; and,

WHEREAS, Local First Chicago has been promoting and supporting independent, locally-owned businesses throughout the City of Chicago for the past 8 years; and

WHEREAS, Local First Chicago launches an exciting new campaign: "Eat, Drink & Buy Local 365," to promote these vibrant businesses year-round and to encourage Chicago citizens to shift $365 annually to independent, locally-owned businesses, resulting in a nearly $100 million positive impact in Chicago's local economy; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, That we the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this 16th day of October 2013, do hereby recognize Local First Chicago's "Eat, Drink & Buy Local 365" campaign and its lasting economic impact on the City of Chicago and encourage citizens of Chicago to support Chicago's locally owned, independent businesses and choose the future we want to see with every purchase we make.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Local First Chicago.
