RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Stone has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 80; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Dick was husband of Fran (Spielman) Stone, father of Jason and the late Craig Stone, and is survived by other family and friends; and •
WHEREAS, He grew up Richard Kahn on the West Side of Chicago where he lived with his grandparents; and
WHEREAS, Dick attended Amundsen High School and worked as a short-order cook, which helped him develop gourmet cooking skills; and
WHEREAS, After his mother remarried and the family moved north, Dick took on his stepfather's surname, Dick Stone and graduated from Highland Park High School; and
WHEREAS, Dick graduated from the University of Illinois campus at Navy Pier before joining the City News Bureau of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, After working at the City News Bureau of Chicago, Dick was one ofthe youngest foreign correspondents hired by the United Press International ("UPI"); and
WHEREAS, In 1966, he worked in Japan where he took dispatches from Vietnam and reported on two major airline disasters within 24 hours. As UPI Bureau Chief in Jakarta of that same year Dick scored a 24-hour scoop on the world when Indonesian President Sukarno was deposed; and
WHEREAS, After returning to the U.S., he worked for KYW Radio in Philadelphia and covered both 1968 political conventions and the funeral of Robert F. Kennedy; and
WHEREAS, In 1975, as WIND Radio's City Hall reporter he landed a rare 30-minute sit-down interview with Mayor Richard J. Daley; and
WHEREAS, While at WIND, Dick met Fran Spielman and assigned her to replace him as City Hall reporter. In 1984, they were joined in marriage; and
WHEREAS, Dick rose to be News Director of WIND Radio and helped build a news team at WCFL Radio before becoming a media strategist who advised politicians, law firms and Fortune 500 companies; and
