Resolution

Whereas, Gladys Wright was born January 11, 1918, in Kosciusko, MS, to the union of John Abraham and Mary Etta Wright and is the oldest living member of the Wright family, boasting three children, 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 25 great great grandchildren, and;

Whereas, Gladys has lived 100 years, which is equal to an astounding: one century, 10 decades, 1200 months, 5,217 weeks, 36,525 days, 876,600 hours, 52,596,000 minutes and 3,155,760,000 seconds;

Whereas, She was part of the great migration north, leaving Mississippi in 1943 at 25 years old, to head to Chicago, where she lived for 75 years and never missed voting in a single election, and;

Whereas, Gladys has outlived the Great Depression, survived the Great Recession, struck back at Segregation, welcomed family members back from Vietnam, witnessed a man walk on the moon and saw another deliver his dream for America, and;

Whereas, Gladys has lived to see phones become "smart," drive thru restaurants, microwave ovens, ATMs, computers, I-Pass electronic toll system and America's first African American president, and;

Whereas, Gladys has been an active member of New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church for close to 40 years, serving in the Senior Choir and Foreign Mission ministries and as a delegate for the National Baptist Convention, and;

Whereas, Gladys worked for over six decades in the manufacturing industry, and;

Whereas, Gladys is an avid Chicago Bulls and Chicago Bears fan who loves shopping, fishing, gardening, and traveling, and;

Now be it resolved, that the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled on this 17th day of January, 2018, do hereby honor Gladys Wright for her contributions to the community.
