RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mark White has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 77; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mark White was the 43rd Governor of Texas whose tenure from 1983 to 1987 was marked by broad-based reforms to the state's education system; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mark White championed the landmark "no pass, no play" policy for high school athletes which remains the rule today; and
WHEREAS, The son of a first grade teacher, the Honorable Mark White was born in Henderson, Texas; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mark White imposed class size limits for elementary schools, competency tests and pay raises for teachers and established the state's first high school basic skills graduation test; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mark White won passage of a $4 billion tax hike to support the state's schools and highways; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mark White served as Texas Secretary of State from 1973 to 1977 and as Texas Attorney General from 1979 to 1983; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Mark White serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Mark White to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his wife, Linda, and his three children, Mark III, Andrew and Elizabeth, the Honorable Mark White imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixth day of September, 2017, do hereby
commemorate the Honorable Mark White for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
