RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jagdish Sharan Verma has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 80; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jagdish Sharan Verma was the loving and devoted husband of Pushpa; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jagdish Sharan Verma was the much-adored father of Shubra and Rashmi to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jagdish Sharan Verma was the 27th Chief Justice of India, from March 25,1997, until he retired January 18,1998; and
WHEREAS, After his retirement from the bench, the Honorable Jagdish Sharan Verma remained the chairman of National Human Rights Commission from 1999 to 2003; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jagdish Sharan Verma also played a major role in monitoring India's media as the first chairperson of the News Broadcasting Standards Authority; and
WHEREAS, Considered the "conscience" of India's judiciary, the Honorable Jagdish Sharan Verma issued several landmark judgments on the equality of women and holding judges accountable for personal misconduct; and
WHEREAS, Because of his reputation for integrity, the Honorable Jagdish Sharan Verma was appointed Chairperson of a three member commission to frame a strict law to combat crimes against women in India; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Jagdish Sharan Verma serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Jagdish Sharan Verma to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Jagdish Sharan Verma imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
