RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Robert E. White has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 88; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A native of Melrose, Massachusetts, Robert E. White was a widely regarded diplomat and the loving husband for 59 years of Maryanne, nee Cahill; and

WHEREAS, Known as an outspoken critic of American policy toward Latin America, Robert E. White served for twenty-five years in the United States Foreign Service and was a former Ambassador to both Paraguay and El Salvador; and

WHEREAS, As Ambassador to El Salvador, Robert E. White faced down death threats and refused to cover up the murder of nuns by the Salvadorian military; and

WHEREAS, During his State Department career, Robert E. White was also posted to Columbia, Ecuador, Honduras and Nicaragua and often criticized the United States government for its support of regimes that suppressed democracy and human rights; and

WHEREAS, Following his diplomatic service, Robert E. White became President of the Center for International Policy, a Washington D.C.-based think tank and advocacy group; and

WHEREAS, During World War II, Robert E. White bravely served his country as a member of the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre of Operations; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Robert E. White serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Robert E. White was an individual of great personal courage and integrity
who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his wife, Maryanne, his son, Christopher, his two daughters, Claire arid Marylou, his brother, David, and his three

grandchildren, Robert E. White imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
