RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Tom Carey has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 87; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Tom is survived by his wife Susan, six children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Tom received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Notre Dame in 1955 and then went on to get his law degree from Northwestern University in 1958; and
WHEREAS, Tom coached the Mount Carmel High School football team to four sectional titles from 1956 to 1960; and
WHEREAS, Tom was the fourth of five generations in the century-plus family business, he steered the Cicero horse track, Hawthorne Race Course through declining revenues as lotteries and casinos expanded. And he helped to rebuild it, after a disastrous fire in 1978 destroyed the grandstand; and
WHEREAS, Tom also helped Arlington International Racecourse rebuild after a 1985 fire at the northwest suburban track. He offered to let Arlington run races at Hawthorne, which it did; and
WHEREAS, Tom was a member of the Chicago Sports Hall of Fame, he died in Boca Raton, Florida, where he and Susan lived during the winters; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Tom Carey imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members ofthe Chicago City Council, assembled this Fifteenth day of January, 2020, do hereby commemorate Tom Carey for his gr-acerJJUed life and do hereby express our condolences to his
