RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Alyce Louise Carter Griffin has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 98; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Alyce Louise Carter Griffin was a pioneering funeral home director and the loving wife of the late Ernest; and
WHEREAS, Alyce Louise Carter Griffin married her husband in 1946 and the next year they purchased the Bell Auto and Undertaking Company from his father, the late Stephen A. Griffin; and
WHEREAS, For the next 50 years the couple worked hand-in-hand to operate what would become the Griffin Funeral Home; and
WHEREAS, The Griffin Funeral Home handled the arrangements for some of Chicago's most notable figures, including Olympian Jesse Owens, Chicago Teachers Union President Jacqueline Vaughn, pianist Lil Hardin and Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad; and
WHEREAS, Following her husband's death in 1995, Alyce Louise Carter Griffin, along with her two daughters and a granddaughter, continued to carry on the family business until the funeral home closed in 2007; and
WHERI:AS, Alyce Louise Carter Griffin was a Lifetime Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and a valued member of the Service Guild at Metropolitan Community Church, the Woodlawn Boys and Girls Organization and the Cook County Funeral Home Owner's Association; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Alyce Louise Carter Griffin serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, To her two daughters, Ethel and Pearl, and her granddaughter, Suzanne, Alyce Louise Carter Griffin imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-ninth day of March, 2017, do hereby commemorate Alyce Louise Carter Griffin for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our. condolences to her family; and
