RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The National Association of Indian Nurses of America (NAINA) is a not-for-profit organization that strives to promote professional excellence in the nursing profession, optimizing die contribution of nurses of Indian heritage to the health and well-being of diose they serve; and

WHEREAS, NAINA is celebrating its 10lh anniversary this month; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed body has been informed of this occasion by the Honorable Patrick O'Connor, Alderman of the 40lh Ward; and
WHEREAS, NAINA is an edinic minority nursing organization representing first generation immigrant nurses, second generation nurses and nursing students of Indian heritage; and
WHEREAS, In the 1970's and 1980's, large numbers of Indian nurses began to immigrate to the United States, but faced many challenges and were initially unsuccessful in uniting under a professional body; and
WHEREAS, In the 1980's, Indian nurses formed a group in New Jersey under the leadership of Aleyamma Samuel. The movement continued to grow, with chapters becoming established in Houston, Dallas, Miami, Chicago and New York; and
WHEREAS, In 2006, all of the independent chapters united to form one national organization, NAINA; and
WHEREAS, In 2008, NAINA held its first conference in Chicago, bringing togedier over four hundred nurses from all over the country; and
WHEREAS, NAINA has continued to grow, and has been recognized by other professional organizations including the American Nurses Association, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, and the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurses; and

WHEREAS, NAINA remains committed to ensuring its members provide high quality, compassionate services, delivering exceptional healthcare to the community and encouraging the continuous advancement of Indian nurses; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this 5th day of October, 2016, do hereby extend our heartfelt congratul...
