RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The quick thinking and valiant intervention of Gary Dailey thwarted a robbery in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Amid recent Fourth of July festivities near Lakeshore Drive, Gary Dailey encountered a large, rowdy group of people blocking the way through a pedestrian underpass; and
WHEREAS, Making his way through the group, Gary Dailey felt someone attempt to take his cellphone; and
WHEREAS, Although the robbery attempt against him was prevented by Gary Dailey's firm protest, another pedestrian found herself a target of the same perpetrator moments later; and
WHEREAS, The robber, an imposing figure more than six-feet tall, grabbed a cellphone from a woman who was barely over five-feet tall, and began to flee the scene; and
WHEREAS, Gary Dailey, the brother of a Chicago officer, courageously launched a pursuit of the perpetrator, bent on bringing him to justice; and
WHEREAS, Gary Dailey kept the man in sight during the chase that covered four blocks until police arrived; and
WHEREAS, With Gary Dailey's help and the assistance of other good Samaritans, Chicago Police apprehended the man and recovered the stolen cell phone; and
WHEREAS, The victim of the robbery, who was accompanied by a young child during the incident, thanked Gary Dailey for his assistance; and
WHEREAS, If not for the alertness and determination of Gary Dailey a criminal would have gotten away with robbery; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-fourth day of July, 2013, do hereby recognize Gary Dailey for his decisive actions and heroism; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Gary Dailey.
