RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable John M. Roll, a victim of the 2011 shooting in Tucson, Arizona, has gone to his eternal reward at the age of sixty-three; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, An Arizona resident since childhood, the Honorable John M. Roll earned both his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Arizona, and also completed a Masters of Law degree from the University of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, At the time of his passing, the Honorable John M. Roll had served the United States' legal community for more than thirty-five years; and
WHEREAS, Before being appointed to the federal bench in 1991, the Honorable John M. Roll served as an Arizona state attorney, Assistant U.S. Attorney, and a state court judge; and
WHEREAS, Described by his colleagues as wise, courteous, and sincere, the Honorable John M. Roll led his court with poise and distinction; and
WHEREAS, A Roman Catholic, the Honorable John M. Roll was active in his church and was described by his pastor as a man who lived his faith; and
WHEREAS, John M. Roll's heroic actions during the tragic events of January 8, 2011, saved the life of another and inspired millions around the world; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable John M. Roll will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and colleagues; and
WHEREAS, To his loving wife, Maureen, his three sons, his five grandchildren, and all of his beloved family, the Honorable John M. Roll imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this ninth day of February, 2011, do hereby commemorate the Honorable John M. Roll for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable John M. Roll.
