MEMORIAL RESOLUTION FOR PASTOR EDWIN SIMMONS

WHEREAS; God in His infinite wisdom, has called Rev. Dr. Edwin Simmons, an exceptional Pastor, Preacher, teacher, Shepherd, Counselor, Advisor; and

WHEREAS, this august body has been informed of his passing by the Honorable Roderick Sawyer, Alderman of the 6th Ward, and Stephanie D. Coleman, Alderman of the 16th Ward; and

WHEREAS, his life and legacy began on December 25,1928 in Humboldt, TN, his family moved to Chicago he pursued a degree in Christian Education and later became a member of New Friendship M.B. Church under the leadership of Pastor S. Freeman. He served as Boy Scout Leader, Adult class Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent and gave freely to those in need; and

WHERE AS, in 1982 he was installed as the 2ml Pastor of New Friendship and for 37 years he served; faithfully; he took his passion to teach to the Baptist State Convention of IL, Progressive National Baptist Convention and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bethlehem District Association, Midwest Region; and.

WHEREAS, he served several years in the U.S. Army as a proud veteran; and worked as an Interior Decorator and was responsible for painting the John Hancock building and various other landmarks across the city of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, his spulmate, Lady Sylvia, was,truly the wind beneath his wings and enjoyed 63 years of marriage; and

WHEREAS, it warmed his heart when his daughter, the late Evangelist Claudette Hicks, son Rev. Anthony and later his daughter, Rev. Dr. Lynda accepted their calls into the gospel ministry; arid

WHEREAS, he leaves to cherish his memories and carry on his legacy the love of his life, Lady Sylvia Simmons, 1 son; 3 daughters, 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and a host of cousins, friends and members of New Friendship M.B. Church;
