WHEREAS, The Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council are saddened to learn of the death of Maggie Kelly, who passed away on November 20, 2019; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of Maggie's passing by the Honorable Thomas Tunney, Alderman ofthe 44th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Maggie was born in Uniontown, Alabama to Joe Bennett and Shavannah Sander Bennett on February 12, 1922; and
WHEREAS, The eighth of 12 children, Maggie committed to her faith at an early age and was baptized at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Uniontown, Alabama; and
WHEREAS, Maggie later moved to Chicago and married SJ Kelly in 1943; and
WHEREAS, Maggie was a founding member of Mt. Hope Missionary Baptist Church in 1945, a member of Sunrise Baptist Church in Chicago, and served as a missionary, mentor, and Sunday school teacher; and
WHEREAS, Maggie worked for the beloved Chicago institution Ann Sather Restaurant from 1959 until her retirement in 2009; and
WHEREAS, Maggie was preceded in death by her husband, SJ Kelly; her parents; her siblings; and her pastors, Reverend W.M. Lambert, Reverend D.H. Moore, and Reverend J. Rawls; and
WHEREAS, Maggie is survived by her godson, Pastor J.E. Storey; her spiritual daughter, Lady Di Storey; her nieces, Robyn Bennett, Mohini Cox, Latisha Bennett-Williams, and Mary Bennett-Larocque; her nephew, James Bennett; her pastor emeritus, Reverend G. Hills; and her pastor, Reverend A. Martin; now, therefore
