4 8TH WARD Resolution
Whereas, the Swedish American Museum was established in Chicago in 1976 as a permanent tribute to Scandinavian immigrants; and
Whereas, the Swedish American Museum is located in the 48th Ward and interprets the immigrant experience for children and adults and promotes an appreciation of contemporary Swedish-American culture; and
Whereas, His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, visited Chicago in April 1976 to help celebrate the grand opening of the Swedish American Museum and in 2001 Sweden's Queen Sylvia attended the opening of the third floor as the Brunk Children's Museum of Immigration; and
Whereas, the Swedish American Museum has had over 1 million visitors, more than 250,000 children learning about language and culture, and hundreds of families researching their history; and
Whereas, the Swedish American Museum has been an important anchor institution in the Andersonville neighborhood; and
Whereas, the Swedish American Museum is celebrating its 40th anniversary on November 5, 2016.
Now, be it resolved, that the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this 9th day of November, 2016, do hereby honor the Swedish American Museum for its contributions to the diverse cultural vitality of the Andersonville community and of the city of Chicago.
Be it further resolved, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Swedish American Museum.
