RESOLUTION TO ADDRESS IDEAS AND BEST PRACTICES FOR URBAN PEDESTRIAN ISSUES IN CHICAGO
WHEREAS, the City of Chicago's Department of Transportation is embarking on an ambitious Pedestrian Plan, to identify new opportunities and ongoing initiatives to strengthen the city's urban pedestrian environment; and
WHEREAS, in creating the Pedestrian Plan, city planners are studying international approaches and solutions to pedestrian and bicycle safety, emphasizing the significance of pedestrians in a world class city; and
WHEREAS, the city of Bogota, Columbia, under the leadership of Mayor Enrique Penalosa, has become one ofthe foremost internationally recognized models of urban pedestrian planning. During his term, Mayor Penalosa promoted a city model giving priority to children and public space and restricting car use, building hundreds of miles of sidewalks, bicycle paths, pedestrian streets, greenways and parks; and
WHEREAS, To further deepen their understanding of transit issues, several members ofthe Chicago City Council participated in the International 2011 Velocity City Conference in Seville, Spain; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this 28th day of July, 2011, do hereby invite the Honorable Enrique Penalosa, former Mayor of Bogota, Columbia, to address the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety and share his experience in creating a pedestrian and bicycle friendly environment; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety invite the City Council delegation from the 2011 Velocity City Conference and the Commissioner of Chicago's Department of Transportation, along with representatives from the Active Transportation Alliance and the Metropolitan Planning Council to participate in this hearing.
