RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Arne Duncan, the ninth United States Secretary of Education, will be the featured speaker at a specil luncheon sponsored by the Commercial Club of Chicago on January 14,2016; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A proud native of the Hyde Park community and the son of educators, Arne Duncan graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University; and
WHEREAS, Early in his career Arne Duncan headed the Ariel Education Initiative, a non-profit education foundation; and
WHEREAS, Arne Duncan was named Deputy Chief of Staff to former Chief Executive Officer Paul Vallas in 1999; and
WHEREAS, Arne Duncan ably served from 2001 to 2008 as Chief Executive Officer of the Chicago Public Schools where he won praise for uniting reformers and educators and embarked on an aggressive reform agenda; and
WHEREAS, Arne Duncan was named Secretary of Education by President Barack Obama and served as a member of his cabinet from 2009 through 2015 when he returned to Chicago; and
WHEREAS, During his highly esteemed tenure as Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan helped to secure support for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act which brought $100 billion to education and helped to fund 325,000 teaching jobs, and advanced increases in Pell grants and a number of other initiatives; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Arne Duncan serve as an example to all; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of January, 2016, do hereby welcome Arne Duncan back to Chicago following his highly distinguished tenure in Washington, D.C.; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, congratulate Arne Duncan on his important contributions to public service and do hereby declare that January 14, 2016, shall be officially recognized as Arne Duncan Day throughout...
