RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, food insecurity and hunger early in a child's life hinders both academic and health outcomes and results in long-term consequences; and,
WHEREAS, more than 450,000 low-income children in Illinois are at risk of going hungry throughout much of their school day because they do not receive breakfast; and,
WHEREAS, 74% of teachers and principals see students who regularly come to school hungry; and,
WHEREAS, school meals may be the only nutritious meals many students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals receive each day; and,
WHEREAS, students who regularly eat school breakfast score 17.5 percent higher on standardized math tests; and,
WHEREAS, alternative breakfast models such as "Breakfast in the Classroom" and "Grab-N-Go" are proven, cost-effective options that improve child nutrition and lessen hunger; and,
WHEREAS, federal reimbursements exceed or surpass the school's breakfast-related expenses in schools that provide a free or reduced-price breakfast to at least 70% of their students; therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and Members of the Chicago City Council, do hereby urge the Chicago Board of Education to ensure that all students are offered standard and alternative breakfast models to ensure that Chicago's children are not going hungry in their schools; and also,
