RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Lura Lynn Ryan has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of seventy-six; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Lura Lynn Ryan was a much-beloved former First Lady of the State of Illinois and the devoted wife of former Illinois Governor George Ryan; and
WHEREAS, Born on July 5,1934 to parents Lawrence and Dorothea Lowe, Lura Lynn Ryan was raised on a Kankakee County farm where her father operated one of the nation's first hybrid seed companies; and
WHEREAS, Lura Lynn Ryan met her future husband in freshman English class when the two were students at Kankakee High School; and
WHEREAS, Lura Lynn and George Ryan were married at the Asbury United Methodist Church on June 10, 1956, and raised a close and loving family of six children, Nancy, Lynda, Julie, Joanne, Jeanette, and George Jr.; and
WHEREAS, When her husband was serving in the Illinois House, Lura Lynn Ryan would often bring their children to Springfield to maintain family closeness; and •>
WHEREAS, Lura Lynn Ryan was a steadfast supporter of her husband throughout his political career; and
WHEREAS, During her tenure as First Lady of Illinois, Lura Lynn Ryan was particularly devoted to issues involving drug and alcohol abuse and promoted organ donation programs and historic preservation; and
WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Lura Lynn Ryan will be remembered by her loved ones for her strength, kindness, empathy, compassion, and humility; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Lura Lynn Ryan imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of July, 2011, do hereby commemorate Lura Lynn Ryan for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
