RESOLUTION CELEBRATING FATHER MATTHIAS MUELLER'S 95™ BIRTHDAY
WHEREAS, Father Matthias Mueller, O.P. will soon celebrate his 95th birthday; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Daniel Solis, Alderman of the 25th Ward, has apprised the members of the chamber of this remarkable man's auspicious milestone; and
WHEREAS, Matthias Mueller was born on September 9, 1922, in Appleton, Wisconsin. He was taught in Catholic School by Dominican Sisters and as a young man joined the Dominicans. In the late 1940s, he studied theology in Salamanca, Spain, earning a licenciate. He was ordained a priest on April 10, 1949, in Rome, Italy; and
WHEREAS, Father Mueller began his pastoral career in Kansas City, Missouri. After a few years, he undertook a new missionary in Cochabamba in the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great in Bolivia. He was a Professor of Theology at the Normal Catholic School. Father Mueller spent ten years there preparing young people to be teachers; and
WHEREAS, He moved to Santa Cruz, Bolivia, in 1970. He studied electricity and then worked for two years helping the poor install electricity in their homes. Father Mueller then joined the Sisters of Maryknoll assisting migrants in the jungle. He even opened a pharmacy to help them; and
WHEREAS, In 1975, he moved to the rural area in the Cochabamba Valley serving the indigenous population. He returned to the United States in 1985 to care for his ailing mother; and
WHEREAS, The following year Father Mueller began as Associate Pastor at St. Pius V Parish in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, where he still serves. He regularly conducts the 8 a.m. daily Mass in Spanish and the early Sunday morning Mass in English. He still hears confession every Saturday at 5 p.m.; and
WHEREAS, Father Mueller is embraced by the St. Pius V community for his great sense of humor, commitment to the poor, infectious laugh and quiet demeanor. He is compassionate, gentle and humble and held in high regard by the parishioners; now, therefore,
