SUBSTITUE ORDINANCE
WHEPvEAS, Aleko Konstantinov is one of the most beloved writers in Bulgaria; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Konstantinov in 1894 wrote To Chicago and Back, a travelogue of his trip to the Columbian Exposition of 1893; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Konstantinov's book was instrumental in making Chicago the symbol of the United States among Bulgarians; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Konstantinov was an avid traveler who helped spur an interest among newly independent Bulgarians in the outside world; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Konstantinov was killed May 11,1897, during what some believe was a political assassination attempt of his friend; and
WHEREAS, a biography of Mr. Konstantinov is attached to this ordinance; and
WHEREAS, Chicago is home to the largest Bulgarian population in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the Union of Bulgarian Writers in the US and Around the World meets at the First Bulgarian Center, 3756 W. Irving Park Road; therefore
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO;
SECTION 1. Pursuant to an ordinance heretofore passed by the City Council which allows erection of honorary street-name signs, the Commissioner of Transportation shall take the necessary action for standardization of 3600-3785 W. Irving Park Road as "Aleko Konstantinov Way."
SECTION 2. This ordinance shall take effect upon its passage and publication.
