RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Matthew Kipling Fong has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of fifty-seven; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Matthew Kipling Fong was a former California State Treasurer and the loving husband of Paula; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Matthew Kipling Fong was the much-adored father of Matthew, Jr., and Jade to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities which he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Raised in a political family in Oakland, California, the Honorable Matthew Kipling Fong graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy and served on active duty from 1975 until 1980; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Matthew Kipling Fong earned a masters degree in business administration from Pepperdine University and a law degree from Southwestern University School of Law; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Matthew Kipling Fong was elected State Treasurer in 1994 and ably served for one term in office; and
WHEREAS, In 2001 the Honorable Matthew Kipling Fong was appointed by then President George W. Bush to serve on the board of a federal agency which helps distribute pensions to more than 1.3 million private sector workers and retirees; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Matthew Kipling Fong's colleagues described him as a man of great courage, intellect and compassion; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Matthew Kipling Fong will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends, and colleagues; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Matthew Kipling Fong imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighth day of June, 2011, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Matthew Kipling Fong for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
