RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, James Smith, a widely admired member of the law enforcement community, has officially retired from the United States Marshals Service following 26 years of distinguished service; and

WHEREAS, Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, James Smith graduated from Bogan High School and St. Xavier University; and

WHEREAS, During his esteemed tenure in the United States Marshals Service, James Smith exemplified the highest and most noble traditions of the law enforcement community; and

WHEREAS, James Smith ably served in the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois, the Northern District of Florida and at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Academy in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, James Smith rose to the rank of Senior Inspector and during his career provided security for Supreme Court Justices, the Deputy Attorney General and the Judiciary in the Northern District; and

WHEREAS, James Smith's duties also included tracking down violent wanted offenders and crime reduction in federal districts; and

WHEREAS, James Smith was a trusted mentor to many young Deputy United States Marshals who under his guidance and leadership developed into exceptional law enforcement officers; and

WHEREAS, While assigned to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Academy at Glynco, Georgia, James Smith gave aid to a wounded officer and helped to apprehend an offender after a robbery of a convenience store; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of his bravery and valor, James Smith was awarded the United States Marshal Services' Director Award; and

WHEREAS, Above all else, James Smith is the loving husband of Margaret and the proud and devoted father of Jack and Maeve; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifth day of November, 2014, do hereby congratulate James Smith on his retirement and do herby express our sincere appreciation for his many years of outstanding and tireless public service; and
