RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Donald H. Rumsfeld has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 88; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Born in Illinois, Donald attended Princeton University, graduating in 1954 with a degree in political science; and

WHEREAS, Donald served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1957, as a naval aviator and flight instructor, and continued his military career in the Individual Ready Reserve retiring as Captain in 1989; and

WHEREAS, At the age of 30, Donald mounted a successful campaign for Congress in Illinois's 13th Congressional District serving from January 3,1963 to March 20,1969; and

WHEREAS, In 1969, President Richard Nixon appointed Donald as counselor and Director ofthe Office of Economic Opportunity; and

WHEREAS, In 1973, President Nixon appointed Donald as U.S. Ambassador to NATO; and

WHEREAS, In 1974, President Gerald Ford appointed Donald as his chief of staff; and

WHEREAS, President Ford appointed Donald as the youngest Secretary of Defense in 1975 where he served for almost two years; and

WHEREAS, When President Ford lost the 1976 presidential election, Donald returned to the private sector in 1977 and served as the CEO of General Instrument Corporation from 1990 to 1993 and chairman of Gilead Science Inc. from 1997 to 2001; and

WHEREAS, Donald was appointed Secretary of Defense for a second time in January 2001 by President George W. Bush and played a central role in the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq; and

WHEREAS, On December 15, 2006, a farewell ceremony was held with an armed forces full honor review and a 19-gun salute at the Pentagon Mall Terrace in honor of his retirement from public service; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Donald H. Rumsfeld imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
