RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, On the 30th day of June, 2014, Sandra Carlson, Principal of Gray School, will retire after 38 years of service dedicated to educating children from Pre-K through 8th grade; and

WHEREAS, After graduating from National College of Education and receiving her master's degree in Reading from University of Illinois Chicago, she also completed Type 75 coursework at Northeastern Illinois University and doctoral coursework from University of Illinois Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Sandra's teaching career began in 1976 at Holy Family School where she taught 3rd grade and remained until 1979; and

WHEREAS, From 1979 to 1981, Sandra taught 5th grade at Piccolo Elementary and from 1981 to 1998 taught Kindergarten and 2nd grade, in addition to being a Reading Specialist, and then becoming Assistant Principal; and

WHEREAS, In 1998 Sandra become principal of William P. Gray Elementary, Chicago Public Schools, where she has remained as principal for 15 years; and

WHEREAS, During Sandra's tenure as principal of Gray Elementary, she led a staff with among the highest number of National Board Certified teachers in the system and worked with students, parents and faculty to raise student achievement to the highest student growth scores in Network One; and

WHEREAS, On a daily basis as principal, Sandra was responsible for the care, safety and education of 1300 students in grade levels Pre-k through 8th grade and, toward that end, she petitioned for and oversaw the building of a new third floor upper grade in 1998 for her expanding school; and

WHEREAS, In her personal life, Sandra has been married to her husband Tom for nearly 40 years, with whom she has three children, Kristen married to Byron Blair, Karin and Erik, and is the proud grandmother of granddaughter Kayt Blair; now, therefore,
