SALUTE TO THE GRAND OPENING OF THE JOHN MARSHALL LAW SCHOOL VETERANS LEGAL SUPPORT CENTER & CLINIC

WHEREAS, On September 26, 2013, John Marshall Law School, one of the oldest and most innovative law schools in Illinois, officially opens a new facility on 19 West Jackson Street for its Veterans Legal Support Center and Clinic; and

WHEREAS, Starting its operations in 2006, the Veterans Legal Support Center and Clinic is the largest operation of its kind in the nation, providing pro bono legal service to veterans in Chicago and throughout Illinois. It is a model program for other law schools seeking to start similar programs for returning veterans in their communities; and

WHEREAS, Envisioning the pressing need as the number of returning veterans was burgeoning, the Veterans Legal Support Center and Clinic was the brainchild of three former students, all of whom had distinguished themselves in military service to this country; and

WHEREAS, The Veterans Legal Services Center and Clinic provides assistance in all aspects of benefit claims filed with the Veterans Administration. Additionally, while the VLSC does not represent veterans in criminal matters before the court, they will help refer veterans who have become involved in criminal cases or other quasi-legal issues to one of the more than 350 volunteer attorneys working with the Center who have been trained in handling such situations; and

WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1899, The John Marshall Law School has always demonstrated its commitment to the nation's military veterans. They have matriculated more students into the prestigious Judge Advocate General program (the distinguished legal arm of the US military), produced more scholarship and published more articles on military and veteran advocacy as well as have more students actively involved in veterans services than any other law school in the nation; and
