RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Mai Whitfield has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 91; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Mai Whitfield was a Tuskegee Airman and an Olympic gold medalist who won track and field titles in the 1948 and 1952 games; and
WHEREAS, Raised in Los Angeles, Mai Whitfield joined the United States Army Air Force after graduating from high school in 1943; and
WHEREAS, Mai Whitfield bravely served his country as a member of the 100* Fighter Squadron of 332nd Fighter Group and participated in 27 combat missions during the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Marvelous Mai," Mai Whitfield was a former star athlete at Ohio State University; and
WHEREAS, Mai Whitfield worked for decades as a sports affairs officer for the United States Information Agency; and
WHEREAS, A goodwill sports ambassador, Mai Whitfield visited countries throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa and trained countless athletes in sports and field; and
WHEREAS, Following a long and illustrious career in government service, Mai Whitfield retired in 1989; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Mai Whitfield serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Mai Whitfield to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Mai Whitfield was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Mai Whitfield imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council assembled this ninth day of December, 2015 do hereby commemorate Mai Whitfield for his grace-filled life and do hereby express ...
