RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Rabbi Herman Schaalman has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 100; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Rabbi Herman Schaalman was a widely admired member of the religious community and the loving husband for 76 years of the late Lotte; and

 

WHEREAS, Rabbi Herman Schaalman was an interfaith pioneer and the longest-serving leader of the Emanuel Congregation in Chicago's Edgewater community; and

 

WHEREAS, Rabbi Herman Schaalman headed the congregation for thirty years and served for nearly three more decades as Rabbi Emeritus; and

 

WHEREAS, Rabbi Herman Schaalman came to the United States from his native Germany in 1935 to attend Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio; and

 

WHEREAS, Rabbi Herman Schaalman married his wife the day after his ordination in May of 1941 and they raised two children, Susan and Michael; and

 

WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Rabbi Herman Schaalman was constantly shaped by the horrors of the Holocaust that he escaped; and

 

WHEREAS, Rabbi Herman Schaalman initially served a congregation in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and went on to teach at a number of Chicago Christian seminaries where he forged ecumenical friendships; and

 

WHEREAS, The holiness, sacrifice and dedication of Rabbi Herman Schaalman serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Rabbi Herman Schaalman imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-second day of February, 2017, do hereby commemorate Rabbi Herman Schaalman for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Rabbi Herman Schaalman.
