RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Sylvia Melamed has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 98; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Sylvia Melamed was the loving and devoted husband of the late Leon; and
WHEREAS, The former Weisberg was raised in Radom, Poland where her father was a merchant and her mother was a seamstress; and
WHEREAS, Sylvia Melamed married her husband at the beginning of World War II; and
WHEREAS, Along with her husband, Sylvia Melamed was captured by the Nazis and became a Holocaust survivor who was liberated by American troops at the end of the war; and
WHEREAS, Sylvia Melamed was sent to Auschwitz and her husband was taken to Buchenwald; and
WHEREAS, After Leon Melamed escaped from Buchenwald he was recaptured and taken to Dachau; and
WHEREAS, With the help of the Red Cross, Sylvia Melamed was united at the close of the war with husband whose 10 brothers and sisters were killed in the Holocaust; and
WHEREAS, In 1948 Sylvia Melamed and her husband immigrated to the Chicago and the couple eventually settled in Skokie where they raised two children; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Sylvia Melamed serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, To her two sons, Stephen and Harvey, her four grandchildren and her four great-grandchildren, Sylvia Melamed imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fourteenth day of December, 2016, do hereby commemorate Sylvia Melamed for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
