RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Joseph Fitzgerald has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 87; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A resident of New Lenox and formerly of Chicago's Beverly neighborhood, Joseph Fitzgerald was a longtime public servant and the loving husband of Jean, nee Freeburn; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Fitzgerald was the much-adored father of Laura, Linda and the late Thomas and the grandfather of seven to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Fitzgerald served from 1946 to 1947 as a Paratrooper with the United States Army's 82nd Airborne Division; and
WHEREAS, An architect-engineer, Joseph Fitzgerald graduated from the University of Illinois in 1951 and was employed for 26 years with the Chicago Building Department; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Fitzgerald worked his way up through the ranks of the department from structural plan inspector to Assistant Chief of Inspections to Assistant Commissioner; and
WHEREAS, From 1969 to 1980, Joseph Fitzgerald ably served as the Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Buildings where he was widely regarded for his intelligence, character and leadership ability; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Fitzgerald was a partner at the Schal Associates construction management firm from 1981 until his retirement in 1985; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Joseph Fitzgerald serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Joseph Fitzgerald to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Fitzgerald will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Joseph Fitzgerald imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
