Resolution

WHEREAS, Rabbi Herman E. Schaalman celebrated his 99^th birthday on April 28, 2015 and his wife Lotte celebrated her 100^th birthday on January 13, 2015. and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Schaalman served the Emanuel Congregation in the 48^th Ward as spiritual leader for over 30 years, now serving as its Rabbi Emeritus, and also served as leader of the Edgewater Clergy and Rabbi Association in the 48^th Ward, and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Schaalman, since his arrival in the United States in 1935 has become known as one of America's foremost leaders in American Reform Judaism, serving as Rabbinical leader and President of the Reform Rabbi's Association having a profound influence on issues of interfaith marriages and patrilineal descent, and

WHEREAS, between 1991 and 2012, Rabbi Schaalman received numerous local, national, and international honors including in 2002 the Order of Lincoln award from the Lincoln Academy of Illinois for his contributions to religious understanding across all faiths leading to interfaith harmony and religious tolerance, and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Schaalman continues to teach and consult in the Chicago area, and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Schaalman and his wife Lotte will be feted at a 99^th and 100^th birthday gala at Emanuel Congregation in the 48^th Ward on May 31, 2015.

NOW, BE IT RESOLVED That we the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this 5^th Day of May, 2015, do hereby proclaim May 31, 2015 to be Rabbi Herman and Lotte Schaalman Day.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Rabbi Schaalman and his wife Lotte.
