EXECUTIVE ORDER NO. 2023-9
WHEREAS, building the next generation of civic leaders through education, reflection, and policy development is of vital importance to the future of the City of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the City to build a setting where young people from across Chicago can come together to share their common goals and better understand their differences; and
WHEREAS, Chicago's teenagers deserve a forum to develop and share their concerns, hopes, and ideas with City leadership to improve the economic, social, and political quality of life for all young Chicagoans; and
WHEREAS, the Youth Commission will be a voice for all young people who aim to propose and implement solutions to citywide problems from the neighborhood level to the highest levels of municipal government; and
WHEREAS, the Youth Commission encourages youth to participate in the continued socio-economic development of Chicago into a more peaceful, prosperous and sustainable society; now, therefore,
I, LOR1 E. LIGHTFOOT, Mayor of the City of Chicago, do hereby order as follows:
SECTION 1. ESTABLISHMENT AND COMPOSITION.
There is hereby established a commission to be known as the "'Youth Commission". The commission shall consist of 32 Commissioners. The Commissioners shall be selected and
appointed by the Mayor through an application process. Commissioners must be 14 to 19 years ol'age at the time of application.
Commissioners shall serve a one-year term with a new term starting each September. Provided they are younger than 20 at the start of the new term, a Commissioner may elect to serve a second consecutive term without reappointment. Except as otherwise provided in this section, no Commissioner may serve for more than two terms.
The Mayor may remove a Commissioner at any time. Vacancies shall be filled on a rolling basis. Commissioners appointed to fill vacancies shall serve for the remainder of the unexpir...
