RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE 80th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR
WHEREAS, December 7, 2021 marks the 80th anniversary of the Imperial Japanese Navy's attack on the Naval Station Pearl Harbor "Pearl Harbor" on the Hawaiian island of Oahu that resulted in the deaths of 2,403 Americans; and
WHEREAS, The attack on Pearl Harbor stunned the nation, leading President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to give his historic "Day of Infamy" speech, and marked the official entrance of the United States into World War II; and
WHEREAS, Like the rest of the nation, the City of Chicago "City" and its residents recognized the gravity of the attack and endured the loss of loved ones, compelling many Chicagoans to join the military to help protect the Nation; and
WHEREAS, The valiant efforts of those at Pearl Harbor and those who went on to fight in World War II battled for the American values of democracy, freedom, and individualism over fascism and oppression; and
WHEREAS, The City has a responsibility to honor those who served and passed, along with those never identified to shine a light on the sacrifice that allowed our City to prosper and provided our Nation with the opportunity to continue the American experiment; and
WHEREAS, The City must remember those who endured the traumatizing events of that day and the wounds that they and their descendants carried and continue to carry; and
WHEREAS, The City recognizes that without remembrance, these sacrifices may be forgotten, which if so, would be offensive, unfortunate and unpatriotic; and
WHEREAS, The City acknowledges that the attack on Pearl Harbor and the veterans who served and died while fighting to protect our country were crucial in the weaving of the fabric of values of our Nation, our dreams, and prevented further attacks; now, therefore,
