Congratulations Extended To Adam Dominik On Heroic Life Saving Effort
WHEREAS, On the evening of February 4, 2014, a man's dog fell through the ice covered water just east of Montrose Harbor, and in desperation the man jumped in to try to save his companion; and
WHEREAS, Moments later, a jogger named Adam Dominik approached the scene, unsure of what had transpired, and spotted the barking dogs on shore and heard the man screaming for help; and
WHEREAS, Dominik, a novice rock climber, leaned over the edge of a retaining wall and saw the man's face submerged in the icy water with the poodle held above the water line. Unsure what to do and frantically realizing time was finite in this rescue attempt, Dominik found a piece of twine that had been strung between two metal posts and threw the rope to the man who insisted the dog be rescued first; and
WHEREAS, Once the dog was pulled to safety, Dominik looped one end of the twine around himself and lowered the other to the man in the water. The man secured the rope around his body and Dominik carefully and slowly began to pull him out of the water; and
WHEREAS, Police arrived about a minute later and pulled the man the rest of the way to safety. About 12 police officers and firefighters placed the man on a makeshift gurney and carried him about a quarter mile to a waiting ambulance. The man was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital with severe hypothermia after being in the water for about ten minutes, but is expected to make a full recovery. The day of this miraculous rescue was his birthday; nurses report that after being taken to the hospital, he told them he was happy to be alive; and
WHEREAS, a devout Christian, loving husband, and resident of Buena Park, Dominik firmly believes God was helping him when he rescued the man from the icy waters. Dominik demonstrated exceptional valor and quick thinking, saving his fellow Chicagoan from the treacherous and freezing winter water, despite risk to himself of being pulled in; now, ...
