RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Alan J. Dixon has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 86; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Alan J. Dixon was a former United States Senator from Illinois and loving husband of Jody; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Alan J. Dixon was the much-adored father of three children to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Known for his hard work and honesty, the Honorable Alan J. Dixon enjoyed a long and highly successful career in national and state politics that spanned more than 40 years; and
WHEREAS, A native of Belleville, the Honorable Alan J. Dixon served his country in the United States Navy Air Corps during World War II; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Alan J. Dixon graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and earned his law degree from Washington University in St. Louis; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Alan J. Dixon rose to become a household name in Illinois politics; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Alan J. Dixon was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1951 to 1963; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Alan J. Dixon went on to serve as Illinois State Treasurer from 1971 to 1977 and as Illinois Secretary of State from 1977 to 1981; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Alan J. Dixon served in the United States Senate from 1981 to 1993 where he was the third-ranking Democrat; and
WHEREAS, A true consensus builder, the Honorable Alan J. Dixon hosted monthly lunches for Illinois' 22 Congress members to champion bipartisan support for a range of issues; and
WHEREAS, After leaving the Senate, the Honorable Alan J. Dixon practiced law in St. Louis and lived in Fairview Heights, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, Above all else, the Honorable Alan J. Dixon was a caring and generous man to his family; and
