RESOLUTION STREET NAMING "Ziemia Podhalariska Way"
WHEREAS, Polish immigration, for many years, has been a force present amongst many different countries and cultures all over the world; and,
WHEREAS, Residents of the Highland Region (in Polish "Podhale"), Poland's southernmost region, migrated to Chicago and became an integral part of how Chicago has been shaped today; and,
WHEREAS, Originally the Polish Highlanders greatly concentrated on the southwest side of Chicago and throughout the years their community has spread throughout, reaching as far as the northwest side of Chicago; and,
WHEREAS, Their strong sense of culture and traditions is not only to remind their posterity of their roots but also a motivation to share and celebrate their folkloric culture with the rest of Chicago; and,
WHEREAS, The Polish Highlanders Alliance was founded in 1929 in Chicago and serves as an umbrella organization to unite all Highlander organizations in Chicago and United States; and,
WHEREAS, The Polish Highlanders will continue to live on and serve its community for many years to come as well as serve as a very important cultural icon for the City of Chicago; and,
WHEREAS, In many respects, Chicago has been the hub of Polish Highlanders living outside of Poland and by naming a section of West Belmont Avenue from North Sayre Avenue to North Newland Avenue "Ziemia Podhalanska Way", it would link those of Polish Highlander descent who are living on the northwest side of Chicago to their homeland; and,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, gathered here this 28th day of June, 2017 do hereby express our congratulations and best wishes to all members of the Polish Highlander community; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to a representative of the Polish Highland Region.
