Title: Tribute to late Charlotte Newfeld

RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Charlotte Newfeld, longtime Lakeview resident and community activist, has passed on at the age of 91; and,
WHEREAS, she was born to Rebecca and Jacob Aronson in 1930; and, WHEREAS, she had two sisters, Janet and Arlene; and,
WHEREAS, she was raised in Albany Park and attended Von Steuben High School; and,
WHEREAS, Charlotte was an accomplished artist, having received both her Bachelor of Science in Art Education and Master's in Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin -Madison, whose work was shown in several Chicago galleries; and,
WHEREAS, she ran for Alderman of the 46th Ward and she came within 66 votes of winning; and,
WHEREAS, Charlotte was best known in Lakeview for her activism on LGBTQ rights, opposition to lights at Wrigley Field, and advocacy for the Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary; and,
WHEREAS, Charlotte was an early ally to the LGBTQ community, having been inducted in the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame in 1996 for her lobbying in support of a Chicago human rights ordinance to protect the community and for increased HIV/AIDS funding; and,
WHEREAS, as Chairwoman ofthe Citizens United for Baseball in the Sunshine [CUBS] organization, her advocacy against lighting and night games at Wrigley Field helped to create important neighborhood protections for residents around the ball field; and,
WHEREAS, later in life she was an essential voice in the creation of the Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Lincoln Park, which according to the Chicago Park District is visited by over 150 species of birds; and,
WHEREAS, Charlotte's family intends to create a 501 (c)(3) to fund upkeep of the Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary; and,
WHEREAS, Charlotte is survived by her daughter Julie and son-in-law Greg Pranski; and,
WHEREAS, Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, her husband Bernard, and her son David; and,
WHEREAS, Charlotte Newfeld leaves a legacy of activism that will continue to inspire Lakeview residents to work for ...
