RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Books should be an important part of every child's life. Unfortunately, not all families have the resources to purchase books or even the time to read to their children. That is where schools must make up for the deficit; and,
WHEREAS, Numerous school libraries are lacking in materials, often having outdated books and reading resources; and,
WHEREAS, Since 1999, Access Books, a non-profit organization from Los Angeles, California, has donated more than a million books to southern California inner-city schools; and,
WHEREAS, After viewing a CNN story on Access Books, Ms. Sandy Blake, an elementary teacher and librarian at Mary Lyon Elementary School, reached out to Access Books to describe their plight; and,
WHEREAS, Located on the northwest side of Chicago, Mary Lyon Elementary School serves 1400 students, but only has 7,000 books in the library, with the most recent publication ofthe year 2000; and,
WHEREAS, After hearing their story, Access Books is now partnering with Mary Lyon to provide additional books, along with comfortable furniture and murals to make their library more inviting; and,
WHEREAS, Access Books staff have worked with Ms. Sandy Blake and the Chicago Public School System's library services to develop a book donation drive for the school; and,
WHEREAS, On August 6, 2018, this partnership will commence with the assistance of volunteers and team members in the refurbishing of Mary Lyon's library in order to be ready for the first day of school on September 2, 2019; and now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty seventh day of June 2018 A.D., do hereby commemorate Ms. Sandy Blake and Access Books on their commitment in providing the Mary Lyon Elementary students with a new and improved library and an opportunity to expand their imaginations; and
