RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, James J. Concannon has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 98; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, James J. Concannon was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and the loving husband for 58 years of the late June, nee Peyton; and
WHEREAS, James J. Concannon was the much-adored father of Patricia, Michael (Ret-C.F.D.), Rosemary and James and the grandfather of five to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, A native of the Southwest Side, James J. Concannon attended Tilden High School and was working at the Campbell Soup plant when World War II broke out; and
WHEREAS, As a member of the "Greatest Generation" who lived through the hardships of the Great Depression and fought to preserve democracy in the darkest hours of World War II, James J. Concannon answered his nation's call to duty; and
WHEREAS, James J. Concannon bravely served in the Philippines aboard Navy LST 562 and returned home following the surrender of Japan in 1945; and
WHEREAS, In May of 1946, James J. Concannon began his law enforcement career with the Chicago Police Department; and
WHEREAS, Less than a month later, James J. Concannon was among officers called to the scene of the La Salle Hotel fire, a tragedy so devastating that City Hall was used as a temporary morgue; and
WHEREAS, In 1966 James J. Concannon was assigned to help provide around-the-clock protection for Corazon Amurao, the lone survivor after Richard Speck brutally murdered eight student nurses; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure, James J. Concannon served as a patrol officer, Detective and Sergeant before officially retiring from the Chicago Police Department in 1979; and
WHEREAS, In 1983 James J. Concannon joined the Chicago City-Council Committee on Finance as an aide where he faithfully served until his retirement in July of 2011; and
