RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Gillian McLaughlin has officially retired as a Sergeant with the Chicago Police Department following more than thirty-five years of devoted public service; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her retirement by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The daughter of a Cook County Circuit Court Bailiff, Gillian McLaughlin was raised in the Edgebrook neighborhood and attended St. Scholastica High School and Lewis University in Romeoville; and
WHEREAS, After working as a legal secretary and as a secretary for an arts studio, Gillian McLaughlin pursued a highly successful and challenging career in law enforcement; and
WHEREAS, Gillian McLaughlin began her illustrious career with the Chicago Police Department on February 19,1974, and became a pioneering female member of the police force; and
WHEREAS, Widely admired for her forthright nature and unflagging loyalty to her comrades, Gillian McLaughlin always strived to achieve the highest degree of professionalism and protect the safety of her fellow officers; and
WHEREAS, Gillian McLaughlin was among the first female members of the Patrol Division and became the first woman to serve as a member of the Mounted Patrol Unit; and
WHEREAS, In 1980 Gilliam McLaughlin was promoted to Detective and served in the Area 5 Burglary and Homicide Units and the Area 4 Homicide Unit; and
WHEREAS, In 1988 Gillian McLaughlin was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and served for twelve years in the 18th District; and
WHEREAS, In 1999 Gillian McLaughlin was assigned to serve with the Area 3 Violent Crimes Unit and officially retired from the Chicago Police Department on October 15, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Of all her many accomplishments, Gilliam McLaughlin is most proud of raising her son, Joseph, who has brought great joy into her life and gone on to become a financial advisor; and
