Agreed Calendar Chicago City Council Meeting June 17, 2020
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The City Council ofthe City of Chicago convenes today acknowledging the historical parallels between today's fight for justice and equality following the murder of George Floyd, and the origins of Pride Month, the Stonewall Uprising that took place on June 28,1969; and,
WHEREAS, The New York Police Department conducted several raids on gay and lesbian bars in the Greenwich Village neighborhood, starting with the Stonewall Inn; and,
WHEREAS, Days of protests by members ofthe gay & lesbian community lasted for days, coinciding with many social movements at the time including civil rights and anti-Vietnam War; and,
WHEREAS, Gay & Lesbian Pride Marches began taking place throughout the country following the one-year anniversary of the police raids at the Stonewall Inn; and,
WHEREAS, The gay and lesbian community has grown to be ever-more inclusive towards and recognizing of its Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersexual, Asexual, all other self-defined members, and Drag performers; and,
WHEREAS, Demonstrators around the country and globe have taken to demand change following the murder of George Floyd at the knee of a Minneapolis police officer while four others stood by watching; and,
WHEREAS, George Floyd's death was captured by onlookers, subsequently going viral on social media and in mainstream news outlets, sparking demands for change not only within law enforcement but also within many ofthe nation's institutions that so often have kept minorities, specifically African Americans, at an institutional disadvantage; and,
WHEREAS, The renewed call for racial equality and opportunity has grown beyond the calls of the African American community, crossing racial, ethnic and socio-economic boundaries in the United States and beyond; now therefore,
