Resolution
Whereas, Orestes "Minnie" Minoso has been called been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God; and
Whereas, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
Whereas, Known as the "Cuban Comet," Orestes "Minnie" Minoso was a fleet-footed power hitter equally revered for his ability to steal bases and hit home runs; and
Whereas, Orestes "Minnie" Minoso, who was the first African-American to play for the Chicago White Sox, also played for the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Senators; and
Whereas, One of the most recognized and dynamic players in the franchise's history, Orestes "Minnie" Minoso helped the "Go-Go White Sox" rise to become one of baseball's most premier teams in the 1950s and 1960s; and
Whereas, During his highly illustrious career, Orestes "Minnie" Minoso hit 186 home runs and batted in 1,023 runs; and
Whereas, A defensive standout, Orestes "Minnie" Minoso earned three Golden Glove awards; and
Whereas, From 1951 to 1953, Orestes "Minnie" Minoso led the American League in stolen bases; and
Whereas, Upon his retirement from professional baseball, the Chicago White Sox retired Orestes "Minnie" Minoso's #9 jersey; now, therefore
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor, and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighteenth day of March, 2015, do hereby commemorate Orestes "Minnie" Minoso for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
Be It Further Resolved, That a suitable parchment copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Orestes "Minnie" Minoso.
