RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Leopold Engleitner has gone to his eternal reward at the age of 107; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, Leopold Engleitner was the oldest-known survivor of a World War II Nazi concentration camp; and
 
WHEREAS, After refusing to renounce his faith as a Jehovah's Witness, Leopold Engleitner survived three concentration camps and forced labor between 1939 and 1945; and
 
WHEREAS, Leopold Engleitner weighed just sixty pounds upon his release from the Ravensbruek camp, after he agreed to work as a farm slave laborer; and
 
WHEREAS, Leopold Engleitner was later ordered to join the German Army, but fled and hid in the Tyrolean countryside until the end of the war; and
 
WHEREAS, The life of Leopold Engleitner was documented in the book and film entitled, "Unbroken Will"; and
 
WHEREAS, Leopold Engleitner toured Europe and the United States to share his experiences after the war; and
 
WHEREAS, The sacrifice and dedication of Leopold Engleitner serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, Leopold Engleitner will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Leopold Engleitner imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighth day of May, 2013, do hereby commemorate Leopold Engleitner for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
