A SALUTE TO KEN RASKIN AND MANNY'S DELI
WHEREAS, Ken Raskin, third-generation owner of the popular and famous Manny's Deli and an outstanding businessman, is being honored for his dedicated service to the community with the honorary renaming of a portion of South Jefferson Street as "Ken Raskin Way"; and
WHEREAS, Manny's Deli has been a Raskin family-owned business for more than 35 years starting after World War II when Jack Raskin decided to leave the restaurant business he ran with his brother at Van Buren and Halsted streets, open his own restaurant on Roosevelt Road. He named it after his son Emanual (also known as Manny) to save money on the previous owners sign whose restaurant was named "Sunny's". He painted over the "SU", painted in an "MA" and saved the cost of an entirely new sign; and
WHEREAS, Manny Raskin served as the cook in the struggling operation. They had to change locations several times and eventually settled at its current address at 1141 South Jefferson Street in 1964. Manny himself later became the proprietor and eventually passed it down to his son, Ken Raskin; and
WHEREAS, Ken Raskin, the owner of Manny's Deli today, along with his three sons Danny, Jason and Matt, his daughter Stephanie and his wife Patti, make sure that their customers leave satisfied. They work together not only to make their customers happy but also to keep their family tradition going; and
WHEREAS, Manny's Deli has been a longtime favorite eatery for many Chicago's best-known citizens. On April 18, 2002, a second location was opened at Chicago Midway International Airport; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert W. Fioretti, Alderman of the 2nd Ward, has apprised this august body of this dedicated restaurateur and has introduced legislation to prepare the honorary street signage; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That, we the Mayor and the City Council of Chicago, assembled on this 28lh day of July, 2011 AD, do hereby salute Ken Raskin and his family and express our heartfelt wis...
