RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Phil Caldwell Neal has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 97; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Phil Caldwell Neal was a former Dean of the University of Chicago Law School and a founding partner of the Neal, Gerber 85 Eisenberg law firm; and

WHEREAS, A native of Chicago, Phil Caldwell Neal was raised in Oak Park and attended Oak Park and River Forest High School; and

WHEREAS, Phil Caldwell Neal graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School where he was President of the Harvard Law Review; and

WHEREAS, Following law school, Phil Caldwell Neal served as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson; and

WHEREAS, Phil Caldwell Neal later assisted Department of State official Alger Hiss in his work as Secretary General of the United Nations; and

WHEREAS, At the conclusion of the United Nations conference, Phil Caldwell Neal practiced law in San Francisco before joining the faculty of Stanford University Law School where he taught future Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and William Renquist; and

WHEREAS, Phil Caldwell Neal was Dean of the University of Chicago Law School from 1963 to 1975; and

WHEREAS, In 1986 Phil Caldwell Neal co-founded Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg where he specialized in complex commercial matters; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Phil Caldwell Neal serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Phil Caldwell Neal was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his loving wife of 31 years, Linda, his sons, Stephen, Timothy and Andrew, his thirteen grandchildren and his great­grandchild, Phil Caldwell Neal imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
