RESOLUTION

The Chicago City Council calls upon the State of Illinois General Assembly to pass the Data Modernization Bill introduced by Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi.

 

WHEREAS, large commercial and residential properties that produce income for their owners are not equitably assessed in the City of Chicago; and,

 

WHEREAS, many everyday small property owners and single family homeowners pay more than their fair share of property taxes in the City of Chicago; and,

 

WHEREAS, property owners of all classes of property deserve fair and accurate assessments of market value; and,

 

WHEREAS, on May 6, 2019, Cook County Assessor published "Nine reasons why Illinois and Cook County deserve this property tax reform bill - and one way to support it," noting "more accurate assessments will mean fewer refunds from municipal budgets and appeals"

WHEREAS, the failure to assess large commercial and residential properties that produce income for their owners results in revenue shortages for the City of Chicago and other service-providing taxing bodies.

 

NOW BE IT RESOLVED, the City Council of Chicago, assembled on this day of November 13, 2019, for the purposes of producing an equitable and fair budget for the residents of the City of Chicago, call upon the State of Illinois General Assembly to pass Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi's Data Modernization Act, or some similar substitute, in order that large, income-producing properties across the City of Chicago may pay their fair share.
